Lights shaped like the lilies on the city's coat of arms, a splendidly decorated Christmas tree, festive aromas and Christmas music set the scene for Wiesbaden's annual Christmas market. Called the Sternschnuppenmarkt, it is set on picturesque Schlossplatz square against the backdrop of the old and new town hall and Hessen's regional assembly building.
This year almost 140 stall-keepers will offer their goods over the four weeks before Christmas. Brightly lit ten meter high lilies, the symbol of the Wiesbaden city coat of arms, point the way to a world full of artistic craftwork, ceramics and glass art as well as culinary treats and tempting rides. A particular eye catcher is the Christmas crib with its life-size figures and the Christmas tree in front of the Town Hall, shining with the light of around 30,000 environmentally friendly light-bulbs and decorated with about 1,000 blue and golden ribbons.
Four gates in the shape of lilies form the entrances to this fairytale scene. The oriental-style stalls decked out in blue and gold are a treasure trove of arts and crafts, some locally made. There's a wide range of products to choose from, including olive wood items, honey specialties, hand-blown glass art and sweet treats from the world's greatest confectioners. Kids are not the only ones whose eyes will light up at the sight of the old-fashioned carousels, the children's railway and the life-size, wooden Nativity scene. Another big attraction is 'Eiszeit' (ice age). This 800 square meter ice rink, located at "Warmer Damm" behind the Hessian State Theatre offers ice skating, curling and much more besides.
The Historic Carousel
The historic carousel on the Schlossplatz is a popular destination for families, kindergarten groups and school parties. A special feature is the fairy-tale motifs on the ceiling of the carousel, whose outside predominantly features illustrations of historic Wiesbaden. Every single detail, every ornament and image is lovingly painted by hand: Biebricher Schloss, Nerobergbahn, Kurhaus … as well as Frankfurt’s Eiserner Steg, Basel’s Rathaus and the Siegessäule in Berlin. Each year sees countless visitors both young and old, flocking to the carousel to take a spin, their eyes shining.
The Ferris Wheel
The Ferris wheel on Mauritiusplatz carries its guests to an impressive height of over 40 meters, promising extraordinary views and impressions during their Christmas shopping. Experience the busy pre-Christmas period in Hessen’s capital from an entirely new perspective.
Visitors to the Ferris Wheel are invited to stop by the "Winterstubb" where they'll find a large selection of delicious typical Hessian specialties to tickle the tastebuds. The Winterstubb will be open until the 3rd of January.
Christmas in Wiesbaden walking tours
During the Twinkling Star Christmas Market a short walking tour "Christmas in Wiesbaden" is offered that takes the visitor to the most beautiful places the city has to offer. Starting from the impressive backdrop of the Marktkirche, the tour passes the large pyramid and continues to the Kurhaus and casino, whose foyer is home to the city's most extraordinary Christmas tree: over 2,000 poinsettia amaze young and old. On past the Hessian State Theatre with its "Eiszeit" on the Warmer Damm, across the festively illuminated Wilhelmstraße and back to the Twinkling Star Christmas Market – there is plenty to find out and discover about Wiesbaden during Advent. The tour starts Fridays and Saturdays at 3 p.m. at the front door of Market Church.
