7.15pm Conversation with the artist in the Red Room

8pm, concert, Fruchthalle

Arch of Sound
German Radio Philharmonic Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern
Conductor: Howard Griffiths
Viviane Hagner, violin

David Philip Hefti (b. 1975)
‘Klangbogen’ (‘Arch of Sound`), music for orchestra (2009)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No 5 in A Major, KV 219

Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
Symphony No. 2 in C Major, op. 61

The ‘arch of sound’ of the Swiss composer David Philip Hefti develops different sound surfaces, atmospheric landscapes, from a single thread of sound. This occurs again at the end of the piece in the form of a lone solo cello. An exciting overture to Mozart’s virtuoso violin concerto and Schumann’s powerful 2nd Symphony.

Concert Highlight International / Chamber Concert

7.15pm: Introduction in the Red Room: PD Dr. Reiner Niehoff

8pm: Concert with Film Projection, Fruchthalle

Metropolis
Frank Strobel, piano
Olav Lervik, piano

Movie: Metropolis
Director: Fritz Lang (d. 1927), rest. 2010
Music: Gottfried Huppertz

The industry boss Fredersen rules over the divided city of Metropolis. In the skyscrapers reside the masters, the workers live deep beneath the earth. The sons of the rich amuse themselves in the 'eternal garden', and it is here that Maria turns up. Coming from the lower city, she pleads for the liberation of the oppressed. Freder, son of the ruler, falls in love with her. His father commissions the inventor Rotwang with the construction of a robot bearing Maria's features. And this technological Maria is to stir up the workers, so that they can be even more rigorously suppressed. The plan is successful..., at first, but the ending of the film is different, more conciliatory.

Beautiful Absent-Mindedness
German Radio Philharmonic Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern
Conductor: Joshua Weilerstein
István Várdai, violoncello
Presentation: Sabine Fallenstein

Peter Tschaikovsky (1840-1893)
Variations on a Rococo Theme for Violoncello and Orchestra op. 33

Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
Symphony No. 60 in C Major (‘Il distratto’)

On November 22nd 1774, the Symphony No. 60 by Joseph Haydn was heard for the first time in the Stadttheater Pressburg. A great success, the last movement had to be repeated. His ‘Il distratto’ (‘The Absent-Minded One’), originally stage music, plays with sudden changes of mood and many musical jests. The violinists, for example, notice in the finale that their instruments have become out of tune and have to tune them again. What a joy, what fun. And Tschaikovsky’s ‘Rococo Variations’ are always a pleasure.
