When Sir Simon Rattle joined forces with director Peter Sellars to put together a scenic presentation of the St. Matthew Passion, the result was outstanding. It was a project that captivated audiences and led to a press frenzy in the feuilleton pages. The production - which Rattle once said was “the most significant thing we have ever done” - is now considered a milestone and a DVD recording ensures the excitement from then can still be experienced. Now the next instalment has arrived. The St. John Passion is intimate and less dramatic. Rattle again turns to proven allies, working largely with singers who were already part of the St. Matthew Passion.
