The Technik Museum Speyer is situated in the very heart of the old imperial town of Speyer, in the immediate neighborhood of the world famous cathedral. In an industrial building, which has been classified as historical monument, a wide variety of exhibits can be explored: Submarines, airplanes, locomotives, ships, fire engines, steam engines and vintage cars. Some of the spectatacular fully walk-in outdoor exhibits include: an Antonov AN26, the largest propeller-driven plane worldwide; a Boeing 747-200; and the latest acquisition the Russian Buran Space Shuttle which is now on show in the new exhibition hall.
Another big attraction, no doubt, is the "U9", a U-boat of the Federal Navy with a length of 64 m and a weight of 466 tons. In a spectacular transport this submarine was towed through the North Sea to Rotterdam and then on the Rhine to Speyer. It still comes with full equipment and can, of course, also be viewed on the inside.
The largest model ship of the world, the "Bremen", in fact, is oceangoing and has its moorings at the Museum.
The "Wilhelmsbau", the latest attraction of the Technik Museum Speyer, will transport you into the turn of the century era. On three floors it is housing, among other items, a variety of music boxes, contemporary fashion, accessories, old toys and uniforms.
From their barrels, carton strips, or dance music cylinders the marvels of technology are still playing their repertory to this day. Continually changing special exhibitions and numerous events are augmenting the annual action programme of the TECHNIK MUSEUM SPEYER.
In August of 1997 the second IMAX Filmtheatre - the IMAX Dome - opened its doors in Speyer. Come and experience the technology of the next century. The dome screen has a diameter of 24 m and is 12 m high, with an overall surface of 800 m². The projection system is weighing a good three tons. As the first filmtheatre of its kind in Germany IMAX Dome is an absolute sensation.
A separate building has been prepared meanwhile for conferences on a smaller and larger scale. Likewise, there will be no problems to arrange family events.
